Picture Books…How can they improve language skills?

Hey everyone,

I was thinking of activities to use in my sessions today and thought of a great idea to share with you all. Wordless picture books have the ability to expand on so many speech and language skills! Without the words to focus on your child can make up their own story and let their imagination run wild. For the kids who have sequencing difficulties, wordless picture books give them the opportunity to generalize the sequence skills they have been working on to a novel environment. For the children who are working on expressive language skills, wordless picture books give them the opportunity to work on their syntax and overall sentence structure. Wordless picture books provide so many opportunities for expansion of overall skills. So the next time your child says, “but I don’t want to read!” try a wordless picture book..you will get them learning and using the skills they have been working on without them even knowing it!
