Augmentative & Alternative Communication

Augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC, is a term that’s used to describe various methods of communication that can help people who are unable to use verbal speech to communicate. AAC methods vary and may be personalized to meet each individual’s needs. Different types of AAC include the following:

  • Unaided AAC: AAC that does not require a physical aid or tool
    • Facial expressions
    • Body language
    • Gestures
    • Sign language
  • Aided AAC: AAC that uses tools or materials
      Symbol boards
      Communication books
      Alphabet boards
      Speech-generating devices
      AAC apps on mobile devices
  • Low-tech AAC: Designed for simple use and make; does not involve electronics
    • Picture Exchange Communication System
    • Symbol charts
    • Communication boards
  • High-tech AAC: Electronic devices that permit the storage and retrieval of messages, allowing for speech output

    • LAMP
    • Technology such as: tablets, computers, eye tracking/eye gaze
