Therapy
Myofunctional Therapy/ S.P.O.T.
Myofunctional Therapy/ Speech-Language Pathologist Oromyofunctional Therapy (S.P.O.T.), is a specialized program exclusively developed for our highly trained speech-language pathologists and offered only at Long Island Speech. Our therapists are uniquely certified in this one-of-a-kind program, which was crafted by Janine Stiene with over 20 years of experience and extensive training. This specialized approach has achieved remarkable success with thousands of patients.
Spot Pal helps accelerate progress in therapy with direct instruction and passively outside of the therapeutic setting- learn more about how it works
Myofunctional Therapy / S.P.O.T. focuses on optimizing oral and facial muscle function to improve overall health, speech, swallowing and well-being — delivered by a team of highly trained therapists and under the guidance of our myofunctional specialist with extensive training in this exclusive program. It addresses issues related to breathing, chewing, swallowing, speech, and correcting dysfunctional patterns that can lead to challenges such as sleep-disordered breathing and temporomandibular joint disorders. The therapy aims to eliminate harmful oral habits, retrain tongue posture and swallowing patterns, and promote proper speech production. It also works to optimize airway space, encourage nasal breathing, and maintain dental occlusion for better overall function.

devices
habit breakers & dental devices
While certain orthodontic appliances such as tongue cribs or rakes are sometimes used to discourage non-nutritive sucking or tongue-thrusting behaviors, these devices do not address the underlying cause of the habit or help develop the proper muscle patterns needed for long-term success.
At our practice, we take a functional approach. We focus on eliminating oral habits and restoring optimal oral rest posture through myofunctional therapy(or oral motor therapy for our younger patients). This evidence-based approach promotes proper muscle coordination, awareness, and stability—skills that cannot be achieved through mechanical restriction alone.
Collaboration with the dental provider is important, and allows us to coordinate care so that any appliance use is thoughtfully paired with therapy designed to retrain oral function, ensuring both structural and functional balance.
*Because of the difficulty in habituation of new patterns, a combination of therapy and an device may be used.
