What is PROMPT?

PROMPT stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. PROMPT is a widely used approach proven to be effective for individuals struggling with expressive speech involving muscle weakness and decreased motor planning. This approach uses touch cues on the client’s articulators such as their lips, jaw, andtongue. A speech and language pathologist must be PROMPT trained in order to provide this specific approach in therapy sessions. It supports and shapes correct movement of the articultors used in expressive speech. This hands-on approach is used when the patient is verbally expressing words, phrases, sentences, and conversation. PROMPT includes the use of tactile, visual, and auditory support to provide the most support in increasing speech intelligibility. Support fades as the patient progresses and independent speech is the ultimate goal. Those who benefit from PROMPT are individuals with a wide range of communication disorders, specifically those diagnosed with apraxia or motor speech difficulties.
