Toys That Everyone Should Have
There are some toys that are often used in speech therapy and for good reason! These are materials that everyone who has kids or works with kids should have. This list of toys tends to elicit a lot of language and help children reach their speech and language goals the most!
Toy animals with a farm – use the toys to go over the names of animals and animal sounds. Use the toy farm for spatial concepts such as in and out, as well as using the animals with the farm to narrate what you or the child are doing. This will help expand their vocabulary and help them play with you.
Spin toy – use this to learn colors. Practice saying the colors and phrases such as “red goes on.” Have them ask for “more” or “give me” with each spin.
Toy cars – these are great for routine phrases such as “ready, set, go!” Hold off on letting go of the car until “go” has been said or attempted.
Surprise boxes – practice colors, words such as open, in, and close. You can also work on vocabulary with whatever is inside the box! What is it? What is it used for?
Puzzles – use all different types of puzzles to cover different types of vocabulary (i.e. animals, transportation, etc.) and even work on categorization with them.
All of the above toys are great staples to have when working with kids. The kids think they’re just playing but are really making progress towards their goals!
