Let’s Talk About Language Development: Birth to 1 year
Every child meets their milestones at their own pace, some earlier or later than others. However, if your child’s communication milestones are falling behind it is important to see a Speech-Language Pathologist. Below is a breakdown of these unique language developments.
Birth To One Month:
- Speech-like sounds are rare and most vocalizations are reflexive, such as burping, coughing, and crying.
Two To Four Months:
- Making sounds back and forth
- Emergence of cooing, which can sound like “ooooo” and “ahhh”
Four To Six Months:
- Expansion begins, more giggling and laughing
- Growls, squeals, yells
- Consonant-Vowel combinations may be produced (uuummm, daaaa)
Six To Eight Months:
- Reduplicated babbling begins: strings of repeated consonant-vowels produced (mamama, dadada)
Eight Months To One Year:
- Variegated babbling or non-reduplicated babbling begins (ma-da, ba-ma)
- Adult like syllables in consonant-vowel sequence (mama, dada, hi)
- Copies and imitates sounds
