Benefits of sign language Benefits of Baby Sign Language Baby sign language improves communication and bonding (sanfordhealth.org)
A common concern parents have about using sign language is that their child will become more reliant on signing rather than verbally communicating. It is actually beneficial to use sign language with babies as it can be beneficial practically, emotionally and cognitively. It can be very frustrating for children to communicate if they do not have the skills yet to do so and as a result have tantrums. By using sign language, babies can communicate what they want and need, reducing instances of frustration. Furthermore, communicating to your baby through signs can create closer bonds. Research has indicated that parents and children who sign report feeling closer to each other and more confident about parenting. In addition, exposing your baby to sign language can increase their language and reasoning skills. Research has shown that cognitively, babies have a higher IQ, larger vocabularies, and begin reading earlier than their age matched peers who did not use sign language.
