What is White Sutton syndrome?

White Sutton syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder. White Sutton syndrome can be characterized by developmental delay, cognitive dysfunction, hypotonia, and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. This disorder causes intellectual disability. Some common characteristics are:

  • Seizures
  • Hearing loss
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Feeding and gastrointestinal problems
  • Mild genital abnormalities in males
  • Urinary tract involvement in both male and females

A common characteristic for an individual with White Sutton syndrome is speech delay. Speech and language are much more delayed than motor skills for the most part. Someone with this syndrome would benefit from receiving speech therapy treatment. An SLP could consider the use of an AAC device. However, there are many more specialists, such as a behavioral therapist or GI specialists, that someone with White Sutton syndrome can benefit from.
