September is World Alzheimer’s Month

World Alzheimer’s Month is the international campaign that takes place every September to raise awareness  about Alzheimer’s. This September marks the 8th World Alzheimer’s Month, as the campaign was launched in 2012. World Alzheimer’s Day is on September 21 each year.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a progressive disease affecting memory, thinking, behavior, and emotion.  Those affected eventually lose their ability to care for themselves, requiring family members to lend a hand.  Dementia affects 50 million people worldwide, Alzheimer’s disease being the most well-known form of dementia.

Facts about Alzheimer’s Disease:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for 50-75% of all cases of dementia
  • The disease destroys brain cells and nerves disrupting the transmitters which carry messages to the brain
  • The cause of the disease is unknown

Common Symptoms seen in those with Alzheimer’s Disease:

  • Forget recent events, names, and faces and have difficulty in understanding what is being said
  • Become confused when handling money or driving a car
  • Experience mood swings and burst into tears for no apparent reason, or become convinced that someone is trying to harm them
  • Lose their inhibitions and sense of suitable behaviour, undressing in public or make inappropriate sexual advances.
